SESSION 1:

Introduction of the course, trainer and trainees

Focus 1: Psychology, its branches and trainees’ specific work context

Objective:

  • Analyze key expressions within psychology and its different branches, improve their pronunciation and application
  • Get to know each other and each other’s work context and difficulties related to the English language used in their professional context
  • Outline one’s work context and responsibilities
  • Listening to lectures / presentations to improve comprehension
  • Practise and improve reading comprehension
  • Clarify trainees’ questions and doubts

Contents:

  • 500 most frequent English words used in psychology literature according to a study
  • Pronunciation guidance
  • Introduction to different branches – classifying psychology
  • Expressions from general English with special meaning in psychology
  • Prefixes and suffixes
  • Collocations related to fields of psychology
  • Word Formation: base word and derivations

Homework for session 2: trainees write a summary about their branch of psychology and their responsibilities, trying to use as many of their key words as possible

SESSION 2:  

Focus 2: Psychology in Practice - input

Objective:

  • Devise language tools for giving a presentation on trainees’ work or a project
  • Become aware and improve pronunciation of key expressions in trainees’ work context
  • Improve listening comprehension of lectures / presentations on professionals’ areas of responsibilities, of specialized vocabulary and speakers’ accents
  • Clarify trainees’ questions and doubts

Contents:

  • Key expressions in trainees’ work context
  • Structuring a presentation / lecture/ talk about one’s work
  • Listening: Occupational Psychologist & Clinical Psychologist
  • Accents

Homework for session 3: trainees prepare a presentation on their work and responsibilities or a project they are involved in

SESSION  3:

Focus 3:  Psychology in Practice - output

Objective:

  • Devise effective language tools for giving a presentation on trainees’ work or a project
  • Become aware and improve pronunciation of key expressions in trainees’ work context
  • Learn what to watch out for when giving a presentation / speech and become more confident in speaking with fluency in a prepared speech
  • Manage questions and answers after a presentation / talk / speech
  • Clarify trainees’ questions and doubts

  • Key expressions in trainees’ work context
  • Giving a presentation / lecture/ talk about one’s work
  • Feedback and corrections of presentations / speeches
  • Survival tools for speakers
  • Questions and answers
  • Adjectives and descriptive language for character and personality

Homework for session 4: collection of documents related to trainees’ work for next session – preparing a summary of an abstract or an article in form of a speech

SESSION 4:

Focus 4: Reading and writing – Part 1

Reports / abstracts / assessments / posters

Objective:

  • Analyse texts for its grammatical structure:

                  Addition / reason /contrast / concession / describing results and findings

  • Devise language tools for writing documents of varied types
  • Develop writing style with appropriate formality and clarity

Contents:

  • Reading and writing documents of varied types
  • Case studies
  • Direct quotation and paraphrasing
  • Linking ideas
  • Conveying contrast
  • Introductions and conclusions

Homework for session 5: write a report on a case study, a training or a conference you attended

SESSION 5:

Focus 5: Reading and writing – Part 2

Trainees’ own documents / translations / emails

Objective:

  • Analyse texts for its grammatical structure
  • Devise language tools for writing documents of varied types
  • Devise language tools for translations
    • Devise language tools for describing processes, flow charts, diagrams and other visual material
    • Acquire language tools for giving a detailed explanation, giving examples, clarifying and emphasizing
  • Develop writing style with appropriate formality and clarity

Contents:

  • Reading and writing documents of varied types
  • Case studies / projects etc. set in trainees’ work context
  • Linking ideas
  • Concluding

Homework for session 6: write a report, an email or a translation set within work context of trainees

SESSION 6:

Focus 6: Psychology and Computers

Objective:

  • Gain fluency in the meaning, pronunciation and spelling of key computing and Internet terms, abbreviations and acronyms
  • Practise and gain fluency in expressing opinions / agreeing / disagreeing / making proposals etc.
  • Discuss ways of using Internet effectively in trainees’ work context – Exchange of ideas

Contents:

  • Computer jargon
  • Verbs formed from nouns and nouns from verbs related to online searches
  • Common words and phrases for electronic information
  • Discussion on advantages and disadvantages of online counseling and other uses of professional uses of the Internet such as social media etc.
  • Computers and Psychology in the 20th and 21st century – comprehension / summary of key ideas & discussion

Homework for session 7: write an essay on the advantages and disadvantages of any methods used in students’ day-to-day work

SESSION 7:

Focus 7: Listening and Comprehension of Online Talks

Objective:

  • Work on and improve comprehension of accents and fast speech and varied pronunciations
  • Compare speakers and their talks according to the degree of difficulty of comprehension
  • Summarize the training course and clarify possible doubts
  • Suggestions for follow-up

Contents:

  • Several videos (TED talks) on psychology on a variety of topics:

           - comprehension exercises and analysis with the help of a glossary

  • Guided discussion on comprehension difficulties, speaking styles and effective speaking
  • Summary & Questions
  • Trainees’ and Trainer’s feedback on the training course
  • Advice on what to watch out for

 

 

  • Practicar les funcions i la terminologia en anglès dins del context especialitzat dels alumnes i els seus àmbits d’intervenció;
  • Prendre consciència de les principals dificultats i errors típics, particularment amb respecte a la pronunciació;
  • Consultar preguntes freqüents sobre qualsevol problema d’idioma relacionat amb el context laboral dels alumnes;
  • Dissenyar un patró d’eines de llenguatge per a: parlar en reunions, conferències, entrevistes / avaluacions, comprensió de conferències, presentacions i argumentacions, redacció d’informes, articles, etc 
 

Overall Objectives:

  • Improve communication and comprehension skills in speaking, reading and writing in the context of professional psychology
  • Practise English functions and terminology within the specialized context of the trainees and their work branches
  • Become aware of main difficulties and typical mistakes, particularly regarding pronunciation
  • Correct typical mistakes, eliminate ‘old bad habits’ and thus improve fluency
  • Consult on frequent questions regarding any language problems related to trainees’ work context
  • Devise a pattern of regularities in English pronunciation
  • Correct pronunciation helps to understand native English speakers – improve listening comprehension
  • Devise a pattern of language tools for:
    • speaking in meetings, conferences, interviews / assessments / discussion forums
    • understanding lectures, presentations and argumentation
    • writing reports, articles, summaries, posters, translating documentation
    • understanding scientific articles, abstracts, reports, posters etc
  • Improve pronunciation, intonation and articulation of speech
  • Devise a set of expressions and phrases typically used in the context of working in psychology
  • Apply appropriate formality of speaking as required by each situation
  • Widen vocabulary knowledge to express oneself with variety
  • Revise grammatical structures to help communicating fluently
